Veterans Committee Update: Supporting Those Who Served

Through mid-July, our ENF grant has helped provide furniture, kitchen supplies and other household essentials to more than 85 veterans and newly stationed Coast Guard enlisted members. Donations continue to arrive and, following several large distributions in June and July, we now have room to accept additional items. Special thanks go to Peter, Marco and Marie for helping collect and distribute these donations. Peter, one of our newest Elks, jumped in immediately when help was needed.

We welcome donations of gently used furniture and household or kitchen items, preferably beginning in mid-August. We would also be grateful for donations of one or two playable guitars. For veterans who play music, a guitar can offer comfort, focus and a valuable way to reconnect with themselves.

Several important resources are available to veterans and their families. Marin County has a specialized Veterans Treatment Court designed to help veterans facing substance-use challenges or PTSD receive support and treatment. Assistance is also available in arranging military honors for a veteran’s funeral, including a bugler and honor guard. In addition, the VA has expanded benefits related to Agent Orange exposure, and the organization Boots to Books helps veterans pursue education and employment opportunities.
